The Gods of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs is the second novel in the Barsoom series, following A Princess of Mars. The story picks up ten years after the events of the first book, with John Carter mysteriously transported back to Mars (called Barsoom), landing in the Valley Dor—believed by Martians to be a paradise for the dead.

Instead, Carter discovers a horrifying truth: the valley is a place of deception, where pilgrims are enslaved or killed by the plant-like Therns, a false priesthood worshipped as gods. As he fights to escape and expose the lie, he allies with his Martian friend Tars Tarkas, meets his long-lost son Carthoris, and battles more deadly enemies, including the Black Martians, or First Born, who claim to be the true gods of Barsoom.

The novel is filled with swordfights, daring rescues, and space-age romance as John Carter works to bring justice to Barsoom and reunite with his beloved Dejah Thoris, ending on a dramatic cliffhanger.

This is a reprint of the original 1913 novel Gods of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, which is in the public domain. This publication is not licensed, sponsored, or endorsed by, or otherwise affiliated with, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.
